Richard Newport, 1st Baron Newport of High Ercall1 
He matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 19 October 1604.2 He graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 12 June 1607 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Shropshire in 1614.2 He was appointed Knight on 2 June 1615 at Theobalds, Hertfordshire, EnglandG.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Shrewsbury between 1620 and 1622.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Shropshire between 1624 and 1626.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Shropshire between 1626 and 1629.2 He was created 1st Baron Newport of High Ercall, co. Shropshire [England] on 14 October 1642, for his loyalty to the Royal cause.2 He retired to France after the murder of King Charles I.2
Clarendon wrote that “his eldest son, Francis Newport, of great expectation, and excellent parts … that if his father might be made a baron, he did believe he might be prevailed with to present his majesty with a good sum of money.” Gibbs states that “the King, though very loath to make ‘merchandise of honour,’ was prevailed upon by his necessities to agree to the creation, whereupon Sir Richard ‘presented the sum of £6,000 to his majesty.2‘ “
