James Brydges, 8th Baron Chandos of Sudeley1

     James Brydges, 8th Baron Chandos of Sudeley was born in September 1642.2 He was the son of Sir John Brydges, 2nd Bt. and Mary Pearle.3,2 He married Elizabeth Barnard, daughter of Sir Henry Barnard and Emma Charlton, on 4 May 1665.2,4 He died on 16 October 1714 at age 72.5 He was buried at Aconbury, Herefordshire, EnglandG.5 His will was proven (by probate) in December 1714.5
     He succeeded as the 3rd Baronet Brydges, of Wilton, co. Hereford [E., 1627] on 21 February 1651/52.2 He matriculated at St. John’s College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 15 June 1657.2 He held the office of Sheriff of Herefordshire from 1667 to 1668.2 He succeeded as the 8th Baron Chandos of Sudeley, co. Gloucester [E., 1554] on 22 August 1676.1 He was Ambassador of the Turkey Company to Constantinople between April 1680 and 1686.5

     James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos was born on 6 January 1673/74.3 He was the son of James Brydges, 8th Baron Chandos of Sudeley and Elizabeth Barnard.1,3 He was baptised on 12 January 1673/74 at Dewsall, Herefordshire, EnglandG.3 He married, firstly, Mary Lake, daughter of Sir Thomas Lake and Rebecca Langham, on 27 February 1695/96 at Westminster Abbey, Westminster, London, EnglandG.4 He married, secondly, Cassandra Willoughby, daughter of Francis Willoughby and Emma Barnard, on 4 August 1713 at Chelsea College Chapel, London, EnglandG.4 He married, thirdly, Lydia Catherine van Hatten, daughter of John van Hatten and Lydia Davall, on 18 April 1736.4 He died on 9 August 1744 at age 70 at Canons, Whitchurch, London, EnglandG.5 He was buried on 23 August 1744 at Whitchurch, London, EnglandG.4 His will was proven (by probate) on 4 September 1744.4
     He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 30 November 1694.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Herefordshire between 1698 and 1714.3 He was Member of the Council to the Lord High Admiral, Prince George of Denmark between 1703 and 1705.3 He was Paymaster-General of the forces abroad between May 1705 and 1713.3 He was created 1st Viscount Wilton, co. Hereford [Great Britain] on 9 October 1714, with a special remainder to his father and heirs.5 He was created 1st Earl of Carnarvon [Great Britain] on 9 October 1714, with a special remainder to his father and heirs.5 He succeeded as the 9th Baron Chandos of Sudeley, co. Gloucester [E., 1554] on 16 October 1714.3 He succeeded as the 4th Baronet Brydges, of Wilton, co. Hereford [E., 1627] on 16 October 1714.3 He was Reversionary Clerk of the Hanaper in November 1714.3 He was Governor of the Turkey Company between 1718 and 1736.3 He was created 1st Duke of Chandos [Great Britain] on 29 April 1719.5 He was created 1st Marquess of Carnarvon [Great Britain] on 29 April 1719.5 He was Governor of the Charterhouse.3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Radnor between 1721 and 1742.3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Herefordshire between 1721 and 1742.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 11 November 1721.3 He held the office of Chancellor of St. Andrews University between 1724 and 1744.3 He held the office of Ranger of Enfield Chase.3 His last will was dated from 14 April 1742 to 13 July 1743. He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.6
