     He fought in the Fourth Ashanti War between 1895 and 1896.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Irish Rifles.1 He fought in the North-West Frontier in 1908.1 He fought in the First World War between 1915 and 1918, where he was mentioned in despatches.1
