     Sir James Balfour, 1st Bt. was born in 1603/4.² He was the son of Sir Michael Balfour of Denmylne and Joanna Durham.^1,2 He married, firstly, Ann Ayton, daughter of Sir John Ayton, before 1644.² He married, secondly, Jean Durham, daughter of Sir James Durham, in 1645.² He married, thirdly, Margaret Arnot, daughter of Sir James Arnot, before 1653.² He married, fourthly, Janet Auchinleck, daughter of Sir William Auchinleck, in June 1654.² He died on 14 February 1657.¹ He was buried at Abdie Church, Abdie, Fife, Scotland^G.²
     He held the office of Lord Lyon King of Arms between 20 April 1630 and 1654.¹ He was appointed Knight on 2 May 1633.² He was created 1st Baronet Balfour, of Denmiln and Kinnaird, co. Fife [Nova Scotia] on 22 December 1633.¹ He authored several antiquarian works.²

     Sir Michael Balfour of Denmylne was born circa 1580.² He was the son of Alexander Balfour of Denmylne.³ He married Joanna Durham, daughter of James Durham, 2nd of Pitkerrow and Janet Wishart. He died on 14 February 1652.²
     He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Fifeshire [Scotland] from 1643 to 1644.¹ He held the office of Comptroller of the Household [Scotland], to King Charles I.¹ He lived at Denmiln, Fife, Scotland^G.¹

     Joanna Durham was the daughter of James Durham, 2nd of Pitkerrow and Janet Wishart.^1,2 She married Sir Michael Balfour of Denmylne, son of Alexander Balfour of Denmylne.
     Her married name became Balfour.

     James Durham, 2nd of Pitkerrow was the son of John Durham, 1st of Pitkerrow and Isabel Kyd of Craigie.² He married Janet Wishart, daughter of James Wishart of Pitcarrow and Janet Lindsay.² He died before 1620.²
     He lived at Pitkerro, Angus, Scotland^G.¹

     Ann Ayton was the daughter of Sir John Ayton.¹ She married Sir James Balfour, 1st Bt., son of Sir Michael Balfour of Denmylne and Joanna Durham, before 1644.¹ She died in 1644.¹
     From before 1644, her married name became Balfour.¹

     Jean Durham was the daughter of Sir James Durham.¹ She married, firstly, James Sinclair before 1645.¹ She married, secondly, Sir James Balfour, 1st Bt., son of Sir Michael Balfour of Denmylne and Joanna Durham, in 1645.¹ She died on 19 July 1645.¹
     From before 1645, her married name became Sinclair.¹ From 1645, her married name became Balfour.¹
