Lt.-Col. Sir James Gardiner Baird of Saughtonhall, 6th Bt.1 
He succeeded as the 6th Baronet Baird, of Saughton Hall, co. Edinburgh [N.S., 1696] on 17 August 1771.1 He gained the rank of Ensign in 1772 in the 17th Foot.2 He fought in the American War of Independence.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1776.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1777 in the 71st Foot.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1794 in the 1st Battalion, Scots Brigade.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1796 in the 28th Light Dragoons.2 He fought in the campaigns in Flanders.2
