     He succeeded as the 4th Baronet Backhouse, of Uplands [U.K., 1901] on 29 August 1944.¹ He was educated at Ampleforth College, Ampleforth, Yorkshire, England^G.¹ He was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England^G.¹ He was managing director of W. H. Freeman & Comapny.¹

     Sarah Ann Stott is the daughter of James Stott.¹ She married Sir Jonathan Roger Backhouse, 4th Bt., son of Major Sir John Edmund Backhouse, 3rd Bt. and Jean Marie Frances Hume-Gore, on 11 July 1997.¹
     From 11 July 1997, her married name became Backhouse.¹

     Sir Alfred James Stott Backhouse, 5th Bt. was born on 7 April 2002.¹ He is the son of Sir Jonathan Roger Backhouse, 4th Bt. and Sarah Ann Stott.¹
     He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Backhouse, of Uplands [U.K., 1901] on 15 November 2007.

     Eleanor Jane Stott Backhouse was born on 26 September 1998.¹ She is the daughter of Sir Jonathan Roger Backhouse, 4th Bt. and Sarah Ann Stott.¹

     Major Sir John Edmund Backhouse, 3rd Bt. was born on 30 April 1909.¹ He was the son of Admiral Sir Roger Roland Charles Backhouse and Dora Louise Findlay.¹ He married Jean Marie Frances Hume-Gore, daughter of Lt.-Col. Gavin Robert Vernon Hume-Gore, on 3 June 1937.² He died on 29 August 1944 at age 35 at Normandy, France^G, from wounds received in action.¹
     He fought in the Second World War.² He gained the rank of Major in the Royal Artillery.² He succeeded as the 3rd Baronet Backhouse, of Uplands [U.K., 1901] on 8 January 1944.¹

     Sir Edmund Trelawny Backhouse, 2nd Bt. was born on 20 October 1873.¹ He was the son of Sir Jonathan Edmund Backhouse, 1st Bt. and Florence Salusbury-Trelawny.¹ He died on 8 January 1944 at age 70, unmarried.¹

     Admiral Sir Roger Roland Charles Backhouse was born on 24 November 1878.¹ He was the son of Sir Jonathan Edmund Backhouse, 1st Bt. and Florence Salusbury-Trelawny.¹ He married Dora Louise Findlay, daughter of John Ritchie Findlay and Susan Leslie, on 4 June 1907.¹ He died on 15 July 1939 at age 60.¹
     He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1917.¹ He held the office of Third Sea Lord of the Admiralty between 1928 and 1932.¹ He held the office of Controller of the Navy between 1928 and 1932.¹ He was Vice-Admiral of the First Battle Squadron, Mediterranean Fleet between 1932 and 1934.¹ He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1933.¹ He gained the rank of Admiral of the Fleet in 1934.¹ He was Commander-in-Chief of the Home Fleet between 1935 and 1938.¹ He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) in 1937.¹ He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1938.¹ He held the office of First and Principal Naval Advisor to H.M.
