Alan (I) de Neville1 
Between 1156 and 1166 he was co-founder (along with his brother, Gilbert) of Tupholme Abbey or Prior, Lincolnshire.1 He held the office of Judge of the Court of Exchequer in 1165.1 He held the office of Justice of the forest in all England between 1165 and 1177.1 In 1166 he was excommunicated by St. Thomas à Beckett for supporting King Henry II in his insistence that the clergy were subject to the ordinary law. He was absolved by the Bishop of London on taking an oath that, on his way to Jerusalem, he would visit the Pope and do his bidding.1,2
