     Sir Charles Sykes, 1st Bt. was born on 31 December 1867.¹ He was the son of Benjamin Sykes and Rachel Carter.² He married Mary Newsome, daughter of Benjamin Newsome, on 1 September 1892.¹ He died on 16 November 1950 at age 82.¹
     He was educated at National School, Kirkheaton, Yorkshire, England.¹ He was chairman of John Crowther and Sons.¹ He was Chairman of the Board of Control of Worsted Woollen Trade during the First World War.³ He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) in 1918.¹ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative Liberal) for Huddersfield between 1918 and 1922.¹ He was created 1st Baronet Sykes, of Kingsknowes, co. Selkirk [U.K.] on 17 June 1921.¹ He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Huddersfield.¹ He was awarded the Commander, Order of Leopold II of Belgium.¹

     Benjamin Newsome lived at Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England.¹

     Mary Newsome was the daughter of Benjamin Newsome.² She married Sir Charles Sykes, 1st Bt., son of Benjamin Sykes and Rachel Carter, on 1 September 1892.¹ She died on 17 July 1944.¹
     From 1 September 1892, her married name became Sykes.
