     William Astell was born on 27 January 1733/34.² He was the son of Godfrey Thornton and Margaret Astell.² He married Elizabeth Thornton, daughter of Richard Thornton, on 11 July 1758.² He died on 6 April 1801 at age 67, without issue.²
     He was given the name of Thomas Thornton at birth.² On 21 February 1777 his name was legally changed to Thomas Astell by Royal Licence.²
