Sir James Macdowall, 14th of Garthland1 
He held the office of a Lord of Session.1 On 8 August 1637 he was retoured heir to his father.1 He held the office of Commissioner to the Parliament in 1641.1 He declined appointment to the judiciary by Oliver Cromwell.2 In 1647 he arranged to bring the Scots army detachment from Ireland for the relief of King Charles I in England.1 He held the office of Senator of the College of Justice.2

He was recognised by Lord Lyon King of Arms, and matriculated his arms at the Lyons Court in 1672.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Wigtownshire between 1689 and 1700.1
