     Sir James Macdowall, 14th of Garthland was the son of Sir John Macdowall, 13th of Garthland and Margaret Kerr.2 He married Jean Hamilton, daughter of Sir John Hamilton of Grange and Elizabeth Crawford.1 He died in 1661.1
     He held the office of a Lord of Session.1 On 8 August 1637 he was retoured heir to his father.1 He held the office of Commissioner to the Parliament in 1641.1 He declined appointment to the judiciary by Oliver Cromwell.2 In 1647 he arranged to bring the Scots army detachment from Ireland for the relief of King Charles I in England.1 He held the office of Senator of the College of Justice.2

     Sir John Hamilton of Grange was born circa 1600.2 He was the son of John Hamilton of Grange and Margaret Hamilton.2 He married Elizabeth Crawford, daughter of John Crawford younger and Elizabeth Cunningham, circa 1629.2 He died in April 1675.2

     William Macdowall, 15th of Garthland was the son of Sir James Macdowall, 14th of Garthland and Jean Hamilton.2 He married Grissel Beaton, daughter of Alexander Beaton of Langhermieston and Margaret Kennedy.1 He died on 22 August 1700.1
     He was recognised by Lord Lyon King of Arms, and matriculated his arms at the Lyons Court in 1672.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Wigtownshire between 1689 and 1700.1
