He was commissioned on 20 February 1781 with the rank of Midshipman, in the service of the Royal Navy on board H.M.S. Buffalo.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 11 April 1794.1 He gained the rank of Commander on 26 April 1798.1 He gained the rank of Captain on 29 April 1802.1 He gained the rank of Rear-Admiral of the Red on 10 January 1837 in the Royal Navy.1

He was educated at Queens’ College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.2 He was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn on 14 October 1619.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Devizes in 1626.3 He was a practising Barrister on 6 June 1627.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Devizes from 1628 to 1629.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Midhurst between April 1640 and May 1640.3 He was Surveyor of the lands of the Queen Consort in 1643.3 In 1643 he was dismissed as a Privy Counsellor.3 He was Secretary of Counsel to the Prince of Wales in 1644.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 14 May 1649.2 His estate was sequestered under the Act of 1650.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Tewkesbury in 1659.3 He held the office of Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1660 to 1661.3 He held the office of Lord of the Treasury on 8 September 1660.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Boroughbridge between 1661 and 1673.3 He held the office of Auditor of the Exchequer between 21 May 1662 and 1673.3 He was created 1st Baronet Long, of the City of Westminster [England] on 1 September 1662, with a special remainder on his nephew, John Long.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 3 July 1672.3
