He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1909 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He fought in the British East African Campaign between 1913 and 1914, where he was wounded.1 He gained the rank of First World War in the where he was wounded.1 He gained the rank of Second World War in the in Ethiopia, Burma and China.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Coldsteam Guards.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1941.1 He was with the British Military Administration of Somalia between 1946 and 1948.1 He fought in the Mau Mau Emergency between 1952 and 1954, with the Kenyan Police.1
