     Doreen Winifred Ashburnham was born on 15 May 1905 at Ashburnham Hall, Sussex, EnglandG.1,2 She was the daughter of Lawrence Ashburnham and Rosalie Winifred Barnard.1 She married Sydney Jackson Ruffner, son of S. Ruffner, in February 1945.1 She died circa October 1991.1
     She was awarded the George Cross (G.C.) circa 1916 for fighting off a cougar which attacked her and her cousin.3 From February 1945, her married name became Ruffner.1
