     John Ernest Harley Collins was born on 24 April 1923 at Durban, Natal, South Africa.² He was the son of George William Collins.¹ He married Hon. Gillian Mary Randal Smith, daughter of Randall Hugh Vivian Smith, 2nd Baron Bicester and Hon. Dorothea Gwenllian James, on 20 November 1946.¹ He married Jennifer Faith Gott, daughter of Lt.-Gen. William Henry Ewart Gott and Pamela Frances Mary Kays, in 1986.³ He died on 4 September 2012 at age 89 at Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.²
     He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.)¹ He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Oxfordshire.¹ He was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.)¹ He was a director of Morgan Grenfell Holdings Ltd.¹ He held the office of High Sheriff of Oxfordshire in 1975.¹ He was appointed Commander, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (C.St.J.) in 1975.¹
