William Waldorf Astor, 1st Viscount Astor1 
William Waldorf Astor, 1st Viscount Astor also went by the nick-name of Willie.2 He graduated from Columbia University, Manhattan, New York City, New York, U.S.A.G, with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was a barrister in 1875 at U.S.A.G.1 He held the office of a Member of the New York Legislature in 1878.1 He held the office of a Member of the New York Legislature in 1881.1 He held the office of Minister for the U.S.A. in Italy between 1882 and 1885.1 He wrote the book Valentino: an Historical Romance of the Sixteenth Century in Italy, published 1885.1,2 He wrote the book Sforza: a Story of Milan, published 1889.1,2 He wrote the book Pharoah’s Daughter, published 1890.1 In 1893 he became the owner of the Pall Mall Gazette and Pall Mall Magazine, and later the Observer.1 He founded the Waldorf Hotel (later the Waldorf-Astoria) in New York.2 He wrote the book John Jacob Astor, published 1899.2 He was naturalized as a U.K. citizen in 1899.1 He was created 1st Baron Astor, of Hever Castle, co. Kent [U.K.] on 26 January 1916.1 He was created 1st Viscount Astor [U.K.] on 23 June 1917.1 He lived at Hever Castle, Kent, EnglandG.3
He was a generous donor to the Prince of Wales and other War Funds.1 According to his Times obituary, he was “very widely read in English, French, and Italian, he loved his Dumas notably; was versed in much war literature, and a real expert on the American Civil War. His colleciton of rare things went beyond the orbit of the splendid connoisseur and approached the museum … Within his double moat and behind his own drawbridge at Hever he was possessed by thoughts of old romance, lived deep in a meditative atmosphere belonging to it, while, at the same time, as a man of business he was diligent, orderly, masterly, and never ceased to be one of the most potent men of business in two hemispheres.”4 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.5
