     He was educated at King Edward’s School, Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk, England.¹ He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England.¹ He was commissioned on 5 May 1847 with the rank of Ensign, in the service of the Cape Mounted Rifles.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 31 March 1848.¹ He gained the rank of Captain on 21 May 1850.¹
