Lt.-Col. Henry Charles Cunliffe-Owen1 
He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant on 19 March 1839 in the Royal Engineers.1 He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, London, England.1 He fought in the Kaffir War between 1846 and 1847.1 He fought in the Crimean War, where he lost a leg.1 He was Assistant Inspector-General of Fortifications, War Office between October 1855 and 1856.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)1 He was Deputy Inspector-General of Fortifications, War Office between April 1856 and August 1860.1 He was awarded the Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 1 April 1862.1
