     Atherton Richard Norman Powys was born on 15 August 1888.1 He was the son of Richard Atherton Norman Powys and Florence Martha Hussey.1 He married, firstly, Elsie Dyus Mattingly, daughter of Frederick R. Mattingly, on 16 February 1915.1 He married, secondly, Edith Smart, daughter of John Smart, in 1957.1 He died in 1976.1
     He graduated from London University, London, England, with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)1 He was a practising solicitor in 1912.1
