     He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in dispatches.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Staffordshire Yeomanry.1 He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.)1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Shropshire in 1939.1 He gained the rank of officer in 1942 in the Royal Pioneer Corps.1
