He was educated at Sherborne School, Sherborne, Dorset, England.1 He was educated at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.1 He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in dispatches.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Dorset.1
