     He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) [Kenya] in 1998.² He was a paleoanthropologist and conservationist.² He held the office of cabinet secretary and head of the civil service between 1999 and 2001.² He was Professor of Anthropology in 2002 at Stony Brook University, Long Island, New York, U.S.A.² He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 2007.² He was chair of the Kenya Wildlife Service between 2015 and 2018.²
