Richard Erskine Frere Leakey was born on 19 December 1944 at Nairobi, Kenya.1 He was the son of Louis Seymour Bazett Leakey and Mary Douglas Nicol.1 He married, firstly, Margaret Cropper in 1965.2 He and Margaret Cropper were divorced in 1969.2 He married, secondly, Maeve Epps in 1970.2 He died on 2 January 2022 at age 77.2
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) [Kenya] in 1998.2 He was a paleoanthropologist and conservationist.2 He held the office of cabinet secretary and head of the civil service between 1999 and 2001.2 He was Professor of Anthropology in 2002 at Stony Brook University, Long Island, New York, U.S.A.2 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 2007.2 He was chair of the Kenya Wildlife Service between 2015 and 2018.2
