     William George Michael Spens, 2nd Baron Spens was born on 18 September 1914.¹ He was the son of William Patrick Spens, 1st Baron Spens and Hilda Mary Bowyer.² He married Joan Elizabeth Goodall, daughter of Reginald Goodall, on 30 June 1941.¹ He died on 19 November 1984 at age 70.¹
     He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, England.¹ He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1935 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)¹ He fought in the Second World War.¹ He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1945 entitled to practise as a barrister.¹ He was with the British Control Commission, Germany between 1945 and 1955.¹ He retired from the military in 1948, with the rank of Major, late of the Royal Artillery.¹ He was partner of Fuller, Jenks, Beecroft & Company between 1955 and 1961.¹ He was registered as a Chartered Accountant (C.A.) in 1960.¹ He was director of Federation of British Carpet Manufacturers.¹ He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Spens, of Blairnsanquhar, co. Fife [U.K., 1959] on 15 November 1973.¹ He was appointed Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.)¹
