     He gained the rank of Pilot on 14 January 1939 in the No 217 Squadron, Royal Air Force.2 He gained the rank of Squadron Leader on 20 November 1942.2 He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.)1 He gained the rank of Wing Commander on 1 October 1946.2 He gained the rank of Group Captain on 1 March 1952.2 He gained the rank of Air Commodore on 1 July 1953.2 He retired from the military on 17 July 1968.2
