     He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for County Durham.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.1 He held the office of Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees between 1924 and 1925.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of County Durham in 1937.1
