He fought in the Isaza Expedition in 1892.1 He fought in the Chitral Campaign in 1895.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was wounded twice and was mentioned in despatches.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1915.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1917.1 He was awarded the Croix de Guerre.1 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1919.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the Bedfordshire Regiment.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1923.1 He gained the rank of Honorary Brigadier-General in 1923.1 He held the office of Military Knight of Windsor between 1930 and 1940.1
