A Gamekeeper’s Record; 62 years at Barden Towers.
Served under three Dukes of Devonshire
At the Bolton Abbey Church, Bolton Abbey, the remains were interred yesterday afternoon of Mr. Thomas Birch, gamekeeper, Barden Towers, the Rev. J.F. MacNabb, the new rector, officiated and there was a large attendance, amongst whom were Mr. Mitchell and Mr. Downs, the two resident agents of the Duke of Devonshire. The coffin was covered with beautiful wreaths and was carried by six stalwart keepers.
Mr. Birch was employed as a keeper on the Duke of Devonshire grouse moors and resided at Barden. He was appointed keeper in 1841 and held that position until his death which took place suddenly on Friday last at the age of 91 years. He thus completed 62 years, having served under three Dukes of Devonshire. About a year ago he was out with the men and succeeded in killing one bird with each barrel of the old muzzle-loading gun which he had used all his 62 years as a keeper.
About 50 years ago he was, together with other keepers, engaged in resisting the inroads of poachers when a party of them were in the woods below the Strid. A desperate encounter took place in which several gamekeepers and poachers sustained injuries. Birch sustained severe injury to his nose as well as a nasty scalp wound.
Mr. Birch was of a kind gentle disposition and was well esteemed by all he came in contact with. He was believed to be the oldest member of the Weslyan Methodist Society in Upper Wharfedale and was also connected by marriage of the Rev. Sylvester Whitehead (through the Listers) –president -elect of the Weslyan Conference.
During the recent visit of the Prince of Wales to Bolton Abbey, for the grouse shooting, Mr. Birch frequently went on the Barden Moor, and met with the local party at luncheon. He shook hands with the Prince, who chatted with the old keeper for some time.
The old gentleman was in good health up to his last and on Saturday last was walking out. His wife died eight and a half years ago. They had a family of eight sons and one daughter.

THOMAS BIRCH, Barden Moor

Died on Monday, October 26th 1903, at the ripe old age of 91 years. Mr. Birch was employed as a keeper on the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey estate. He was appointed keeper in 1841, a position he held until his death, after completing 62 years service under three Dukes of Devonshire. Mr. Birch is supposed to have been the oldest member of the Wesleyan Church in Upper Wharfedale. The funeral took place at Bolton Abbey, Skipton. The officiating clergyman was the Rector, Rev. J.F.Macnabb, six stalwart keepers engaged on the estate acting as bearers.
