     Lt.-Col. Ernest Gates P. Smith was the son of George William Gates Smith and Mary Ann Alice Woodward.2 He married Emma Appleby on 3 December 1900 at Colaba, Bombay, India.2 He died on 19 November 1952.2
     Lt.-Col. Ernest Gates P. Smith also went by the nick-name of Busty.2 He was commissioned in 1893 with the rank of Private, in the service of the Norfolk Regiment.2 He fought in the First World War.2 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)2 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.)2 He retired from the military in 1932, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, late of the Norfolk Regiment.1
