He gained the title of 3rd Baronet Threipland, of Fingask Castle, Perthshire [N.S.], de jure.

Lt.-Col. Ernest Gates P. Smith also went by the nick-name of Busty.2 He was commissioned in 1893 with the rank of Private, in the service of the Norfolk Regiment.2 He fought in the First World War.2 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)2 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.)2 He retired from the military in 1932, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, late of the Norfolk Regiment.1
