     Sir Basil Alexander Talbot McFarland, 2nd Bt. was born on 18 February 1898.¹ He was the son of Sir John McFarland, 1st Bt. and Annie Talbot.² He married, firstly, Annie Kathleen Henderson, daughter of Andrew Henderson, on 10 September 1924.¹ He married, secondly, Mary Eleanor Dougan, daughter of William Dougan, on 2 July 1955.¹ He died on 5 March 1986 at age 88.¹
     He was educated at Bedford School, Bedford, Bedfordshire, England.¹ He fought in the First World War, with the Artists Rifles.¹ He was chairman of Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway.¹ He was chairman of Lanes (Derry) Ltd.¹ He was chairman of Sir Alfred McAlpine & Son (NI.)¹ He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet McFarland, of Aberfoyle, co. Londonderry [U.K., 1914] on 28 March 1926.¹ He held the office of High Sheriff of the City of Londonderry between 1930 and 1938.¹ He held the office of Mayor of Londonderry in 1939.¹ He was awarded the Emergency Reserve Decoration (E.R.D.) in 1945.¹ He held the office of Senator [Northern Ireland] between 1945 and 1950.¹ He held the office of Mayor of Londonderry between 1945 and 1950.¹ He held the office of High Sheriff of County Londonderry in 1952.¹ He held the office of Aide-de-Camp to HM Queen Elizabeth II between 1952 and 1960.¹ He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1954.¹ He was appointed Commander, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (C.St.J.)¹ He lived at Aberfoyle, County Londonderry, Ireland.¹
