He was educated at St. Paul’s School, London, England.1 He fought in the Sudan Campaign in 1898.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Marines Light Infantry and Army Service Corps.1 He fought in the West Africa Campaign in 1899.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1901, and he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1900.1
