     Sir Alastair Frederick Down was born on 23 July 1914 at Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland.2 He was the son of F. E. Down and Margaret Isobel Hutchison.3 He married Bunny Mellon in 1947.2 He died on 22 October 2004 at age 90.2
     He was educated at Edinburgh Academy, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.2 He was educated at Marlborough College, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England.2 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1940.1 He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.)1 He was deputy chairman of British Petroleum in 1969.2 He was chairman and chief executive of Burmah Oil between 1974 and 1980.2 He was appointed Knight in 1978.2 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.)1 He lived at Brieryhill, Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland.1
