     William Robert Legard was born on 31 October 1943.¹ He is the son of Sir Thomas Digby Legard, 14th Bt. and Mary Helen L’Estrange Malone.² He married, firstly, Sally Ann Craig, daughter of W. H. Craig, on 30 September 1967.¹ He and Sally Ann Craig were divorced in 1974.¹ He married, secondly, Helen Le-Pine, daughter of R. G. Le-Pine, in 1978.¹
     He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.¹ He was educated at Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England.¹ He lived in 2003 at Lowthorpe Lodge, Lowthorpe, Driffield, Yorkshire, England.¹
