He was educated at Sherborne School, Sherborne, Dorset, EnglandG.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was on Staff 2nd Army HQ for defence of Sussex.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Reserve of Cavalry, attached to the Army Remount Service.1 He was CO of the 49th Remount Squadron, Salonika.1 On 12 April 1932 his name was legally changed to Malcolm Bruce Somerset by Deed Poll.
