He succeeded as the 5th Viscount Frendraught [S., 1642] on 26 February 1698, de jure.2 On 19 May 1698 he was served heir to his nephew, James Crichton, 2nd Viscount of Frendraught.2

The estates by now had dwindled considerably, some sold to pay fines for Jacobitism, the Irvine castle of Fedderet was the last place on the Scottish mainland to hold out for King James VII and II, while the 11th Laird, who had appointed his kinsman Alexander Irvine of Murthill as his executor, had further burdened the estate with onerous provisions for other members of the fmaily.1
