He graduated from Glasgow University, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, ScotlandG, in 1872 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He graduated from Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG, in 1877 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)1 He was admitted to Scots Bar in 1878 entitled to practise as a Advocate.1 He was Lecturer on Constitutional Law and History between 1878 and 1888.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Linlithgowshire between 1895 and 1913.1 He was appointed Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.) in 1897.1 He held the office of Solicitor-General [Scotland] between 1905 and 1909.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1909.1 He held the office of Lord Advocate between 1909 and 1913.1 He held the office of Lord Justice General between 1913 and 1920.1 He was created 1st Baron Strathclyde, of Sandyford, co. Lanark [U.K.] on 15 January 1914.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the British Empire (G.B.E.) in 1917.1
