Sir John Ramsay, 1st and last Lord Bothwell1

He was attached to the court of King James III of Scotland. In July 1482 he escaped execution at Lauder, one of only a few of the King’s attendants to do so.1 He was created 1st Lord Bothwell, of Balmain and Fasque, Kinchardineshire [Scotland] before 16 February 1483.2 In 1486 Amb England and 1488.3 He held the office of Scottish Ambassador to England between 1486 and 1488.1 On 8 October 1488 after King James III’s murder he was prosecuted and his title forfeited.3 He took refuge in England, acting as a spy for King Henry VII, and plotted to deliver the Scottish King to Henry.1 On 18 April 1497 he was rehabilitated under the Great Seal, although not restored to his peerage, nor to some of his estates.1 On 13 May 1510 lands in Kincardineshire, called the Barony of Blamain, were erected into a free baorny for him and his successors.1 He lived at Trarinzean, ScotlandG.4 He fought in the Battle of Flodden on 9 September 1513.1
