     He was distinguished with Kenneth Mackenzie of Kintail at the taking of Strome Castle from Donald MacAngus Macdonell of Glengarry, avenging his grandfather’s death.1

     He was also known as Iain Mac Ruari Mhic Mhathoin.1

John ‘Iain Mor’ Matheson of Fernaig1

     John ‘Iain Mor’ Matheson of Fernaig was the son of John Matheson of Fernaig and Anna Roy.2 He married Mary Macrae, daughter of Reverend Donald Macrae of Dornie.1 He died in 1715, a Jacobite supporter.1
     He purchased Bennetsfield but retained designation of Fernaig.1 He was commercially successful in selling droves of highland cattle in the Lowlands.1 He also had several daughters.1
