     He gained the rank of Surgeon-Major in the A.M.R.¹ He graduated with a Diploma of Public Health (D.P.H.)¹ He was appointed Fellow, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (F.R.C.S.E.)¹

     Alexander Norman Balfour was born on 20 March 1909.¹ He was the son of Frederick Robert Stephen Balfour and Gertrude Norman.² He married Elizabeth Eugenie Cowell, daughter of H. W. Cowell, on 4 February 1942.¹ He died on 17 October 1996 at age 87.^1,3
     He was educated at Stowe School, Buckingham, Buckinghamshire, England^G.¹ He was educated at Trinity College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England^G.¹ He was admitted to the Royal Company of Archers on 18 November 1930.¹ He fought in the Second World War between 1940 and 1945, in France and North Africa, and was mentioned in despatches.¹ He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Peebles-shire in 1954.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Intelligence Corps.¹ He lived at Dawyck, Peebles-shire, Scotland^G.¹

     Jean Penelope Balfour was born on 27 May 1906.¹ She is the daughter of Frederick Robert Stephen Balfour and Gertrude Norman.² She married, firstly, A. D. Gurewitsh on 13 August 1937.¹ She and A. D. Gurewitsh were divorced in 1957.¹ She married, secondly, Seymour Palestin on 30 December 1958.¹
     From 13 August 1937, her married name became Gurewitsh. From 30 December 1958, her married name became Palestin.¹ She lived in 2001 at 120 East 2nd Street, Manhattan, New York City, New York, U.S.A.^G.¹
