Richard Samuel Attenborough, Baron Attenborough was born on 29 August 1923.1 He was the son of Frederick Levi Attenborough and Mary Clegg.1,3 He married Sheila Beryl Grant Sim, daughter of Stuart Grant Sim and Ida Carter, in 1945.1 He died on 24 August 2014 at age 90.4
He was educated at Wyggeston Grammer School for Boys, Leicester, Leicestershire, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Royal Acadamy of Dramatic Art, London, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Flight Sergeant Airgunner and Cameraman in the Royal Air Force.1 He was an actor, film producer and director between 1942 and 1993.1 In 1961 he produced Whistle Down the Wind.1 In 1962 he produced The L-Shaped Room.1 In 1969 he produced and directed Oh! What a Lovely War.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) by Leicester University, Leicester, Leicestershire, EnglandG, in 1970.1 In 1972 he directed Young Winston.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws (D.C.L.) by University of Newcastle, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, EnglandG, in 1974.1 He was appointed Knight in 1976.1 In 1977 he directed A Bridge Too Far.1 In 1978 he directed Magic.1 In 1981 he produced and directed Ghandi.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) by Kent University, Kent, EnglandG, in 1981.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.G, in 1983.1 He was appointed Fellow, British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 1983.1 In 1985 he directed A Chorus Line.1 In 1987 he directed Cry Freedom.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) by Sussex University, Brighton, Sussex, EnglandG, in 1987.1 In 1992 he directed Chaplin.1 In 1993 he directed Shadowlands.1 He was created Baron Attenborough, of Richmond upon Thames in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames [U.K. Life Peer] on 30 July 1993.1,5 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.)6 He lived in 1999 at Old Friars, Richmond Green, Surrey, EnglandG.1
