Lt.-Gen. Sir James Outram, 1st Bt. also went by the nick-name of ‘the Bayard of India’.2 He was educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.2 He was commissioned in 1819 with the rank of Indian Cadet.2 He gained the rank of Ensign in May 1819 in the 4th Native Infantry, Bombay.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in August 1819 in the 1st Grenadier Native Infantry.2 He was agent commanding Bhil Corps in 1825.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1832.2 He was political agent for Mahi Kanta in 1835.2 He was political agent for Lower Sind in 1839.2 He gained the rank of Brevet Major in 1839.2 He was political agent for Upper Sind in 1841.2 He gained the rank of Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel in 1843.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1843.2 He was Resident of Satara in 1845.2 He was Resident of Baroda between 1847 and 1852.2 He gained the rank of Major in 1848.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1853.2 He was Resident of Baroda between 1853 and 1854.2 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1854.2 He was political agent and Commandant of Aden between June 1854 and November 1854.2 He was Resident of Oudh in December 1854.2 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1856.2 He fought in the Persian War between 1856 and 1857, as commander of the British Forces.2 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1857.2 He fought in the Indian Mutiny in 1857.2 He was Chief Commissioner of Oudh between 1857 and 1858.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1858.2 He was created 1st Baronet Outram, of Bengal, India [U.K.] on 10 November 1858, with an annuity of £1,000 p.a. to him and his immediate successor.2 He was Member of the Council of the Governor-General of India.2 In 1861 KSI.2
