He was educated between 1920 and 1925 at Durham School, Durham, County Durham, EnglandG.2 He graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1928 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)2 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1932 entitled to practise as a barrister.2 He fought in the Second World War.2 He gained the rank of Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Artillery.2 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) on 14 June 1945.1 He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.) in 1950.1 He held the office of Recorder of Pontefract between 1951 and 1954.2 He held the office of Judge of the Mayor’s and City of London Court between 1954 and 1959.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)1 He held the office of Recorder of London between 1964 and 1975.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Surrey in 1973.1
