Sir John Maxwell of Auldhouse, 1st Bt. was born in 1648.1 He was the son of Sir George Maxwell of Auldhouse and Pollok and Annabella Stewart.3 He married Marian Stewart, daughter of Sir James Stewart of Coltness and Kirkfield, on 23 February 1671.1 He died on 4 July 1732, without issue.1
He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland]1 He was created 1st Baronet Maxwell, of Pollok, co. Renfrew [Nova Scotia] on 12 April 1682.1 He held the office of a Lord Commissioner of Exchequer and Treasury.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Renfrewshire between 1690 and 1696.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Renfrewshire in 1698.1 He held the office of a Lord of Session in 1699.1 He held the office of Lord Justice Clerk in 1702.1 On 27 March 1707 he received an extension of remainder to his heirs of entail whatsoever in his lands and estates.1
