He gained the rank of Captain in 1914 in the Grenadier Guards (SR.)1 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1915, where he was wounded.1 He was Special Representative in USA of the Ministry of Shipping between 1916 and 1919.1 He was awarded the Chevalier, Legion of Honour.1 He was awarded the Commander, Order of the Crown of Italy.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) in 1918.1 He was member of the USA Government Shipping Control Committee between 1918 and 1919.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (D.S.M.) U.S.1 He was created 1st Baronet Guthrie, of Brent Eleigh Hall, co. Suffolk [U.K.] on 6 February 1936.1 He fought in the Second World War between 1941 and 1945, in the Security Division.1

Sir Giles Connop McEacharn Guthrie, 2nd Bt. was born on 21 March 1916.1 He was the son of Sir Connop Thirwall Robert Guthrie, 1st Bt. and Mary Islay McEacharn.3 He married Rhona Leslie Stileman, daughter of Frederic Stileman, on 17 July 1939.1 He died on 31 December 1979 at age 63.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He was winner (with C. W. A. Scott) of the Portsmouth-Johannesburg Air Race in 1936.1 He was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Commander (A) in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.) in 1941.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Guthrie, of Brent Eleigh Hall, co.
