He was appointed Knight in 1312 by the Lord Deputy.3 He was commander of the English forces in Ireland in 1318.3 He fought in the Battle of Dundalk on 14 October 1318, where he defeated the forces of Edward Bruce, who had been crowned King of Ireland, with Bruce being slain.3 He was created 1st Earl of Louth [Ireland] on 12 May 1319.2 In 1320 his marriage to Aveline was ratified by the Pope, even though he had been contracted to marry Aveline’s sister, Maud.3 He held the office of Justiciar [Ireland] between 21 May 1321 and 18 November 1323.3
On his death the Earldom of Louth became extinct.3 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4
