     He was Preofessor of Metallurgy between 1969 and 1973 at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. He was Preofessor of Engineering Materials between 1973 and 1989 at Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1979. He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1997.
