John Gilbert Winant was born on 23 February 1889 at New York City, New York, U.S.A.2 He was the son of Frederick Winant. He married Constance Rivington Russell, daughter of Archibald Douglas Russell and Albertina Taylor Pyne, in 1919.1 He died on 3 November 1947 at age 58 at Concord, New Hampshire, U.S.A., from suicide.2
He was educated at St. Paul’s School, Concord, New Hampshire, U.S.A.G.2 He was educated at Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A.2 He fought in the First World War.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1917 in the 8th Aero Squadron (Observation), U.S. Army Air Force.2 He held the office of Governor of New Hampshire between 1925 and 1927.2 He held the office of Governor of New Hampshire between 1931 and 1935.2 He held the office of U.S. Ambassador to the U.K. between 1941 and 1946.1 He was awarded the Order of Merit (O.M.) in 1947.2 He wrote the book Letter from Grosvenor Square, published 1947.2
