Robert Sempill1 
He was educated at Scots College, Douai, FranceG.2 He gained the rank of Cadet before 1688 in the Normandois Infantry Regiment, French Army.2 He gained the rank of Ensign in 1689 in the Scottish Guards.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1708 in the Lord Galmoye’s Infantry Regiment.1 In 1712 he was seemingly recognised as 9th Lord Sempill (being heir male to 8th Lord) by titular James III.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1714/15 in the Dillon Regiment.1
