     He gained the rank of Major in the Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment.¹ He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1919.¹

     He was educated at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, England^G.¹ He gained the rank of officer between 1939 and 1943 in the Union Defence Force, South African Artillery.¹ He graduated from Cape Town University, Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa^G, with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)¹ He gained the rank of officer in 1943 in the Royal Artillery.¹ He gained the rank of officer in 1944 in the 17th/21st Lancers.¹ He was registered as a Associate, Royal Institute of British Architects (A.R.I.B.A.)¹

     Hector Hillaby was a practising barrister.¹ He lived at Chelsea, London, England^G.¹

     Mary Josephine Hillaby was born in 1929.² She was the daughter of Hector Hillaby.³ She married Norman David Nigel Fairbairn, son of David Alexander Fairbairn and Emmeline Mary Coxon, on 20 October 1951.¹ She died on 20 September 2016 at Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England.²
     From 20 October 1951, her married name became Fairbairn.

     Jonathan David Fairbairn was born on 14 October 1952.¹ He is the son of Norman David Nigel Fairbairn and Mary Josephine Hillaby.²

     Mark Benson Hector Fairbairn was born on 25 October 1960.¹ He is the son of Norman David Nigel Fairbairn and Mary Josephine Hillaby.² He married Fiona Stock, daughter of Commander Graham P Stock, in 1990.¹
