William Robert Hunter Charley usually went by his middle name of Robert.² He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England^G.¹ In 1943 he was enlisted in the Royal Ulster Rifles.¹ He was educated at Queen’s University, Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland^G.¹ He fought in the Second World War.¹ He gained the rank of officer on 2 September 1944 in the Royal Ulster Rifles.¹ He fought in the Korean War.¹ He was Commanding Officer of the OTC Queen’s University, Belfast between 1965 and 1968.¹ He was appointed Officer, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (O.St.J.)¹ He retired from the military in 1971, with the rank of officer, late of the Royal Irish Rangers.¹ He was on Staff in 1972 at Northern Ireland Polytechnic, Ireland.¹ He lived in 1976 at Seymour Lodge, Larch Hill, Craigavad, County Down, Ireland^G.¹
