     Brig.-Gen. John William Vincent Carroll was born on 12 July 1869.¹ He was the son of Frederick Maxwell Carroll and Mary Fitzgerald.² He married Barbara Mary Woodroffe, daughter of James Tisdall Woodroffe, on 6 August 1902.¹ He died on 16 January 1927 at age 57.¹
     He was educated at The Oratory, London, England^G.¹ He was commissioned in 1891, in the service of the Norfolk Regiment.¹ Between 1895 and 1899 he served in West Africa and North Nigeria.¹ He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1901, in Mounted Infantry.¹ He was Commandant of the Mounted Infantry, Egypt in 1909.¹ He was Commander of the Mounted Infantry, South Africa in 1910.¹ He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.¹ He was commander of the 7th (Service) Battalion, Norfolk Regiment between 1914 and 1915.¹ He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1916.¹ He was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir of Russia 4th class.¹ He was awarded the St. George’s Cross 4th class.¹ He was commander of the Russian Forces at Morjegosskaria in 1919.¹ He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1919.¹
