He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was in the Diplomatic Service between 1921 and 1953.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1942.1 He held the office of Political Representative to Japan between 1946 and 1951, with the rank of Ambassador.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1948.1 He held the office of Ambassador to the U.S.S.R. between 1951 and 1953.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the British Empire (G.B.E.) in 1953.1
